Chris Izworski, reporting from Bay City for the Great Lakes Gazette, notes a milestone weekend for Great Lakes maritime heritage: the U.S. Navy officially commissioned the USS Cleveland (LCS 31) into active service on Saturday, May 16, during a ceremony on the Cleveland waterfront. The Freedom-variant littoral combat ship—fourth to bear the city's name—marks the first U.S. Navy warship ever commissioned in Ohio, having been christened and side-launched at Fincantieri Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wisconsin, on April 15, 2023. Meanwhile, on the Canadian side of Lake Michigan, Toronto's Jack Layton Ferry Terminal is welcoming its first new electric ferries in 60 years, officially named Lady of the Quays and Toronto Islander following a public naming campaign that drew nearly 18,000 votes.
Closer to home, the SS Badger, the legendary car ferry linking Lake Michigan's two shores, launched its summer service on Friday between Ludington, Michigan, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The community turned out in force—high school bands, elementary students, and locals celebrated the arrival of the historic vessel. These seasonal reopenings signal what mariners have been anticipating: navigation season is underway, and water conditions across the lakes remain favorable. Lake Ontario is running 3.84 feet above Low Water Datum, Lake Erie sits at 2.94 feet, and Lake Huron holds a healthy 1.97 feet, all well above minimum thresholds for safe passage.
Current marine forecasts show light to moderate conditions: 1- to 2-foot waves dominate Superior through Ontario, with a cold front moving south across Michigan triggering isolated thunderstorms over southern Huron. Northeast winds along Lake Michigan's western shore will ease as the front passes. These are typical spring conditions as the lakes transition fully into the season.
The momentum on the water reflects broader regional ambitions. Municipal leaders from both sides of the border met last week in Hamilton to discuss expanding freight movement across Great Lakes waterways—a shift from highways that could ease congestion and lower emissions, though only with sustained government and industry investment.
