Chris Izworski, reporting from Bay City for the Great Lakes Gazette, notes that the self-unloader Kaye E. Barker eased into the graving dock at Fraser Shipyards in Superior, Wisconsin, on Monday for thruster work and a mandatory five-year survey expected to take ten days. The arrival marks the beginning of essential maintenance as the Great Lakes shipping season continues to build momentum heading into summer operations. Elsewhere on the lakes, the S.S. Badger car ferry will officially inaugurate the 2026 season this Friday, May 15th, with its return voyage from Ludington, Michigan, to Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The public is invited to celebrate the maiden voyage at the Car Ferry dock in Manitowoc beginning at 11:30 a.m., where the community will welcome the Badger back to service with marching bands, local entertainment, and festivities. Meanwhile, the bulk carrier Oakglen arrived at Port Weller Drydock in St. Catharines, Ontario, for her own five-year inspection and mandatory hull, propulsion, and machinery surveys under Transport Canada standards. Water levels across the basin remain above Low Water Datum—Lake Erie notably at 2.90 feet and Lake Ontario at 3.76 feet—which supports robust cargo operations. However, gale warnings remain in effect this morning on Lakes Superior and Michigan through this afternoon as a clipper system moves east; Lake Superior is particularly affected, with a 29.7-inch low accompanying the system. Those conditions should clear by Wednesday as high pressure rebuilds. The National Museum of the Great Lakes opened a new micro-exhibit this month titled "Lake Erie Starts Here: Northwest Ohio," which explores how stormwater and everyday practices in northern Ohio watersheds directly impact the lake's health. The exhibit runs through June 28th and underscores the environmental stewardship essential to sustaining the Great Lakes ecosystem that freighters and ferries depend upon.
