Chris Izworski, reporting from Bay City for the Great Lakes Gazette, notes that the weekend brought significant maritime traffic to the region despite the navigation season remaining officially closed. The U.S. Navy's USS Cleveland (LCS-31), a Freedom-class littoral combat ship, passed downbound through Port Huron on Friday, May 9, en route from Fincantieri Marinette Marine shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin, to Cleveland, Ohio. The new warship will be officially commissioned on May 16 before departing the Great Lakes for her homeport at Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida.
In other vessel movements, the Canada Steamship Lines bulk carrier Oakglen arrived at Port Weller Drydock at Ontario Shipyards in St. Catharines, Ontario, on Friday for her scheduled 5-year inspection and maintenance period. These mandatory surveys ensure compliance with Transport Canada and classification society standards for safety and structural integrity, typically involving hull inspections, steel renewal, propulsion checks, and machinery servicing. The Lee A. Tregurtha, meanwhile, completed an unusual stone cargo operation in Erie, Pennsylvania, Friday evening.
Water levels across the Great Lakes remain above Low Water Datum, with Lake Ontario posting the highest elevation at 3.71 feet above datum and Lake Superior the lowest at 1.36 feet. Marine forecasts call for light winds and calm conditions through early next week as a high-pressure ridge moves across the system, with wave heights declining from 1 to 3 feet depending on the lake. The National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo opens a new micro exhibit this month exploring how everyday actions in Northwest Ohio affect Lake Erie's health, underscoring the ongoing importance of water stewardship in the region.
